About this event
In this fun and exciting workshop, we will create textured backgrounds for paintings. We will then, using the watermedia of your choice, work to turn these into unique, successfully finished pieces. Textures make your paintings feel more dynamic, create a sense of depth, and help viewers emotionally connect with your work.
Textures also provide an easy way to add interest to a painting – textures create spontaneous marks
and patterns that our hands could never do.
You can work in the watermedia of your choice (acrylic, watercolor, acrylic inks, and/or gouache). We will provide all texturing materials and applicators.
This class is appropriate for all levels. Beginners will have plenty of help and support from us, and more advanced artists will be able to add some interesting and complex texturing techniques to their skill sets. We will create at least 6 textured starts, and you can expect to leave with 1-3 finished paintings.
Supply List
We will provide the texturing mediums and materials, applicators, one pre-textured surface, and various additional materials.
You bring:
Six (or more) surfaces of your choice. Watercolor paper (any weight), canvas, and pre-gessoed boards (like Gessobord, Claybord, or create your own) all work well. Size is up to you, but we suggest you work 11 x 14 or larger.
Watermedia paints of your choice. Acrylics (fluid or regular), acrylic inks, gouache, and/or watercolor all work well. Bring colors of your choice, but we suggest a warm and cool yellow, a cool red, and two blues (one light and one dark) as a minimum.
Brushes you like to use. A large soft mop-type brush is useful if you have one.
A spray bottle
Palette
Water container (larger is better)
An apron
Rags or paper towels
Optional: texturing materials like stencils, stamps, wine corks, sponges, papers with raised surfaces, etc. We will have a large assortment for you to use as well.
Instructors
Pam Haunschild and Jennifer Eufusia co-teach this class. We have done this workshop (along with others) at many different Art Centers like Sitka Center for Art; Ecology and Mendocino Art Center. Jennifer works primarily in watercolor and Pam in acrylic, and students tell us they benefit significantly from our different, but compatible styles. We are known as supportive and popular teachers who help students discover their inner creativity and unique vision.
