Subject: Copy of Sumi Ink on Clayboard Class
From: Artists' Studio Association

Hello Students!

I am excited to share this process with you!

You will go home with an original sumi Ink Reductive Painting and everything you will need to know to make more.

Carol

Supplies to Consider Bringing

  1. Tools to make marks:  pottery or dental tools, tools used for scratch art, etc. (I use a razor blade...and find it can make every mark I need...but some students like to experiment with other mark making tools)
  2. Printed images that you might want to use.  I will have lots of photos to share, cows, chickens, sparrows, flowers, etc.  so there is no need to bring anything but you are welcome to do so if you like.
  3. Select a black and white image with a strong value range. The subject (the chicken or cow, etc.) of your image should be no larger than 6x6 to fit onto an 8x 8 panel. Smaller is ok, but 6x6 will have a better impact. Keep it simple…ie one chicken , 3 ducklings, 1 sparrow on a branch, etc.  This is an example of a black and white photo with strong value contrast.  See the example below

Wear clothes that can get stained or bring an apron. India/Sumi Ink stains
