Tara Choate will demonstrate acrylic marbling on paper, then guide participants through their own marbling experiments.

In this fun and exciting workshop, we will create textured backgrounds for paintings. We will then, using the watermedia of your choice, work to turn these into unique, successfully finished pieces. Textures make your paintings feel more dynamic, create a sense of depth, and help viewers emotionally connect with your work. Textures also provide an easy way to add interest to a painting – textures create spontaneous marks and patterns that our hands could never do.

In this two-day workshop, students will gain skills to navigate the compelling and often elusive medium of watercolor. While our focus will be on portraiture, the techniques we cover apply to other subjects as well. We will explore the power of gradients and layering, learn how to reliably produce specific effects, then apply these techniques in order to create vibrant and expressive portraits of increasing complexity.

In the spirit of a bootcamp, this workshop is intended to rapidly introduce you to everything you need to get a good start in watercolor portraiture. No prior portrait experience required, but some familiarity with watercolor is recommended.
